Christian, we live in a white supremacist culture, not a black supremacist culture. If you so choose, you can become an an ally. We need all the allies we can get to overturn this destructive system.
My fellow/sister allies and I start with the assumption that white supremacy exists. By white supremacy, we mean not primarily individual acts of hate groups burning crosses on lawns, though we include that too, but systemic collections of attitudes, beliefs, practices, images and approaches, that foreground people of European descent, AKA white people, as best examples of what is good, beautiful, worthwhile, moral, trustworthy, upstanding, and so on.
For example, until recently all or most superheroes were white, as were mannequins meant to represent images of ideal beauty in clothing stores. Racism is a direct result of white supremacy, and includes acts of prejudice, hatred, and violence against people of color. People of different non-white ethnicities experience racism in different ways. People of African descent, AKA black people, are the recipients of a most virulent form of racism, beginning with the system that stole and enslaved African people for 265 years in this country. In addition, indigenous peoples of this land were the subjects of systematic genocide in the name of manifest destiny. And if you don’t know yet what that was, look it up and notice the perfect example of white supremacy in action!
Systems of white supremacy support and allow violence against peoples of color. Our hope is that if we can dismantle white supremacy within ourselves and within the culture, we can reduce and ultimately eliminate this violence. The OP’s rage was against systems of white supremacy, and how we enact those systems. It’s up to each of us as individuals to dismantle those systems both within and outside of ourselves, if we so choose. I choose to try. Do you?
